Neighbours tell of horror after disabled pensioner is battered with baseball bats in his home

New CCTV images have been released by police in a bid to trace the attackers

Neighbours of a disabled pensioner who was battered by masked thugs with baseball bats in his own home have spoken of their shock over the brutal attack.

They told how the 75-year-old was viciously assaulted after the gang burst into his modest flat and repeatedly demanded cash.

The man, a widower who was having a cup of tea with a neighbour at the time, was taken to hospital with serious injuries where he is recovering after treatment.

The visiting friend was also attacked and was left with a broken collar bone and cracked ribs.

Neighbours on Gate Field Close in Radcliffe, Bury , spoke of their anger as police revealed new CCTV images of a car they want to trace in connection with the vicious attack.

It is being treated as an aggravated burglary but it is not known what, if anything, was taken.

Detectives have released a CCTV image of a light coloured Peugeot 206 which they say the gang used to escape the scene

A neighbour described the elderly man as ‘strong and determined’, adding: “He will not give in. He’s a very, very strong man.

“What sort of money did these people think they were going to get?

“Apparently they were just asking for money. His neighbour had gone around and made him a cup of tea when there was a knock at the door.

“He opened it to three masked men and tried to slam it shut, but one of them wedged a baseball bat inside.

“This is a nice area and we just cannot understand why someone would do this.

“He is a lovely bloke, a really nice fella. He is very friendly and we all look out for each other. A neighbour heard the commotion and she told her husband.

“He rang 999 and shouted at them that the police were on there way.”

It is believed the man has no family. The attack happened at around 8.40pm on Saturday, August 4.
